Coastal Theme Garden – Hythe
The client’s brief for our case study was to create a natural coastal garden. The garden needed to also have an area where the family could visit and relax. A water feature or water noise and a good sized seating /patio area for dining outside. The client required sheds for storage and a BBq for entertaining. Also the clients wanted a garden that would invite them to go down to from their balcony.
Our challenge with this garden was to enhance the space to show off the wonderful views the coast can offer. Our goal was to create a garden that was as close to nature as possible whilst still usable in practice as an entertaining garden. We delivered a custom built sea groyne water feature which adds a great focus to the garden. Natural groyne wood was installed to seeming rise from the ground. Behind this a sunken seating area was created which was constructed from ragstone tying in with the coastal feel. In the centre of this communal seating area they are able to enjoy a fire pit/BBQ whilst feeling enclosed with planting all around. A flat area to the side for dining adds to the relaxed coastal feel.
All paths reflect the natural informal feel and flow through the garden with raised planted beds scattered around. We wanted the beds to reflect the informal nature of the garden thus steering away from standard flower beds along the fence. Two impressive olive trees which are underlit complete to structure of the planting. The remaining plants are a mixture of natural coastal perennials found along the beach and more traditional coastal garden perennials. There is great seasonal interest with the winter being a vibrant as other seasons. We also added two sheds decorated in a tasteful beach hut style completing a very relaxing natural coastal garden.
I am absolutely thrilled with the end result, which proves the point that it’s worthwhile to involve professional designers and use professional landscapers/gardeners. I think that it has actually exceeded my already high expectations – Mark and Charmaine have always been bubbly and confident!
Again, I am bowled over with the garden and cannot wait until the electrician does the lighting and water feature, and better still, the surprises in colour and growth that Spring will present.
